To revitalize a challenging 1973 property poorly constructed and not up to code, our objective was creating a functional outdoor living space for a young family. Straying from the initial plan for an interior overhaul due to the house's inadequate structure, we shifted the focus outdoors. The project included a sprawling three-tiered deck connected by a walkway to a custom-built treehouse, both enhancing the usability of the previously inaccessible backyard.
Our design team began by getting to know the client and their family, gaining insight into how they balance work and family life. This understanding shaped our approach, allowing us to create a design that integrates the client's love for his young sons with a lifestyle that embraces both natural living and the digital age.
The centerpiece 250 square foot treehouse was constructed using standard dimensions with minimal waste. Designed with simplicity and sustainability in mind, it incorporates natural materials like cork, birch plywood, and thermally treated timber. The treehouse serves multiple purposes: a home office, artist studio, and yoga space. The design draws inspiration from the client's child's fascination with simple shapes, infusing the treehouse with playful yet functional geometric elements. Notably, the "solar room" within the treehouse is painted a vibrant yellow to combat seasonal mood disorders by reflecting light on cloudy days, enhancing both mood and energy.
